Grand Rapids has a Mayor-Manager form of government which means the Mayor is a Commissioner-at-Large, representing the whole City and setting a vision and policy leadership direction for the Executive staff team to implement. The City is divided into three wards, represented by two commissioners each. The 3rd Ward Commissioner represents southeast neighborhoods including Eastgate. Terms for both offices are four years with a limit of two terms.

These offices have the most direct impact on equitable policies related to local quality of life such as public safety, fair and safe local elections, housing code enforcement, sanitation and water quality.
